The Department of Earth Sciences at Carleton University invites applications from qualified candidates for a preliminary (tenure-track) appointment in Structural Geology and Critical Minerals Resources at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning on or soon after January 1st, 2025.
The Department seeks candidates capable of conducting cutting edge research in the application of Structural Geology and Tectonics to Critical Minerals Resource Geology. The search for critical minerals in North America relies on understanding the dynamic processes within the Earth’s crust governing the sources, transport pathways, timing, and depositional systems. These processes collectively create the optimal conditions for mineral and energy resource formation. The successful candidate should demonstrate an ability to attract industry or public sector funding to support post-graduate student research pursuant to Canada’s Critical Minerals Strategy ().

The candidate will be expected to teach core courses in Structural Geology and Tectonics, to provide a thriving graduate research program, and to supervise 4th-year theses in the Earth Sciences B. Sc. Honours programs. The candidate is also expected to actively engage and inspire our students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, to pursue careers in the geosciences.
The Department of Earth Sciences offers a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum with a strong fieldwork component. Offerings include B.Sc. programs (Honours, Major and General), as well as a Concentration in Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoecology (Honours), a Concentration in Resource Economics (Honours) and a concentration in Resource Valuation (Honours). The Honours programs meet the academic requirements for the Professional Geoscientist of Ontario accreditation (). Other programs include Combined Honours with Biology, Chemistry or Physical Geography. At the graduate level, the Department offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs.
The Department is part of the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Centre (OCGC), a collaborative research and graduate institution paired with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Ottawa. The OCGC hosts substantial analytical infrastructure, including: instruments suitable for analyses of stable and radiogenic isotopes (TIMS, MC-ICP-MS, IR-MS, AMS) and quantification of elemental abundances (ICP-OES, ICP-MS, LA-ICP-MS); clean-lab facilities; SEM and EMPA laboratories capable of quantitative mineral liberation analysis; XRF, XRD, CT, cathodoluminescence, and fluorescence microscopy. Additionally, Carleton campus is close to federal research institutions (e.g., Geological Survey of Canada, Canadian Museum of Nature, National Research Council). Further information on the Department can be obtained at and .
