Job Description

Applications will be considered from residents and non-residents of Colorado.

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

About the Work Unit

This position is part of CDOT’s Engineering Team, providing project design and construction support to Region 5 in Durango. This team ensures that all projects improve and maintain the transportation system and are designed and constructed in a safe and cost-effective manner.

About the Position

As the Engineering Technician, classified as Engineering/Physical Sciences Technician III, under the supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer, you will provide technical engineering support for both design and construction. As an assistant project engineer on construction projects, responsibilities include overseeing construction operations to ensure compliance with the plans and specifications, compiling and checking documentation that reports quantities of work performed and preparing payments to contractors.  This position assesses contractors’ schedules and schedules testing and inspections of materials and completed work. Position applies engineering theories, principles and standards to the design and preparation of plans and specifications for highway projects and provides oversight of consultant engineer teams. You will also provide support to the team through survey and data collection, constructability reviews, specification writing, and construction schedule creation for the design of projects.

Your duties and responsibilitieswill include, but are not limited to, the following:

Inspect construction projects including asphalt paving, concrete paving, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramps, structure walls, avalanche mitigation equipment installation, culverts, minor structures (large diameter culverts), major structures (box culverts and bridges), traffic control, storm water management, excavation and embankment.

Assure accurate documentation of daily work performed, filling out daily dairies and quantity calculations for contractor payments.

Quantify the amount of various items of work completed on a construction project by utilizing acceptable practices and equipment to accurately measure and represent the work done.

Support the Project Engineer in scheduling and overseeing CDOT and consultant personnel.

Assist Project Engineer with drafting change orders and minor contract revisions.

Utilizes Gmail, AASHTOWare, MS Project, MS Word, Excel, ProjectWise, SAP, PMWeb and other applicable project inspection/testing specific computer software programs.

Generate and maintain an accurate detailed estimate and projected quantities for the construction costs of assigned projects using PMWeb and SAP.

Complete and make final checks to as-constructed plan sheets and project specifications to ensure accuracy and compliance with established standards and policies.  This includes getting the final sign-off from all the various specialty branches within CDOT and any outside agencies that are involved with assigned projects.

Review the plans, specifications, and entire Plans, Specs, & Estimate (PS&E) package for the assigned projects.

Ensure that the contractor complies with all standards and specification including the “Project Special Provisions” required for each assigned project.

Conduct constructability reviews and specification writing for design projects prior to advertisement.

Generate and maintain accurate detailed schedules and projected production rates for the construction duration of projects.

Assist in the review and analysis of contractor schedules and create a schedule comparison to assess schedule completion and project timeliness, justification of added time, etc.

Review of contractor drawdown through schedule loading.

Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment: 

Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, with the opportunity for a flexible schedule outside of the primary construction season.

Periods of overtime, evening, and weekend work is likely during construction season

After a training period, you may have the option to work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work, except as required for on-site construction administration

May be required to assist after normal business hours during natural events that create road closures or project issues

Travel required during work hours throughout the Region (Western Colorado) to construction work zones, including off-road driving in remote areas

Occasional overnight travel for meetings/ or trainings (2-4 times per year).

Likely periods of out of town temporary relocation to project sites, paid for by CDOT, during construction season

May be required to staff overnight projects as needed

Approximately 80% spent in the field, 20% spent in the office

Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Minimum Qualifications

Experience Only:

A high school diploma or GED; AND at least six (6) years of experience in any combination of the following: assisting in the design of construction plans, monitoring construction projects by conducting materials testing, project inspection, and/or documentation;

Experience & Education:

A high school diploma or GED;
AND a combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least six (6) years: Coursework from a U.S. accredited college or university in chemistry, construction management, engineering, engineering technology, geology, project management or another field of study related to the duties of this position will be considered.  A transcript verifying this information must be submitted. Work experience in any combination of the following: assisting in the design of construction plans, monitoring construction projects by conducting materials testing, project inspection, and/or documentation will be considered.
