Job Description
RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES: - Identify and anticipate EHS concerns and hazards related to Hot Work activities (i.e. Pot Carrying, Pit Digging, under Furnace digging, Furnace related activities, Oxycutting, Burning, etc.) surveying environmental, operational, and occupational conditions; rendering opinions on new equipment and procedures; investigating violations recommending preventive programs.
- Work with site leadership to ensure that Hot Work equipment required standards and inspections of condition and operability are completed as required.
- Ensure the integrity of the site PPE program by regularly assessing site compliance with required PPE (i.e., employees are wearing the proper PPE, and that it’s in good condition).
- Support basic new hire EHS training working with others in the EHS organization.
- Working with the Director of Asset Management, develop the technical requirements and standards for all hot work equipment.
- Assist where required, the site supervisory staff in the investigation of incidents and documents.
- Ensure issues identified through audits, job safety observations (JSO’s), management field observations (MFO’s) are completed on time and per the identified action plans.
- Enforce safety policies, standard operating procedures (SOP) by conducting inspections; observations, audits, walkthroughs, reporting statistics; counseling managers and employees.
- Assist in ensuring that contractors adhere to SMS requirements.
- Assist with any required EHS sampling.
- Work with site leadership to maintain appropriate level of necessary PPE conforming to PPE assessments and any specific requirements of the host mill and SMS. Audit, track, order, and maintain primary responsibility for PPE levels.
- Support site leadership in medical emergencies and be able to certify for first aid, CPR, AED and bloodborne pathogens.
- Working with site leadership to ensure employees are “Fit for Duty” prior to initiating work activities and upon return to work following an injury or prolonged absence.
- Daily walkthroughs and inspections of:
- Equipment (guarding, leaks, light functions etc.)
- Personnel (proper PPE, following established procedures, training, complete pre-use inspections etc.)
- Mobile equipment operations (driving patterns, qualified operators, pre-use inspections complete etc.)
- Ground condition (grading needed, slip trip hazards, etc.)
- Shop conditions (tools put away, garbage disposed of, aerosol cans properly stored, housekeeping, lighting, exit signs, door condition, etc.)
- Rail (switchman pre-use complete, PPE, proper switch LOTO taking place, communication, lead man protection, switch and rail condition, etc.)
- Burner area (fire extinguishers properly staged and charged, proper PPE, no combustibles in work area, pre-use inspections complete, soap and water test bottles available and labeled, inspect hoses and manifolds, etc.)
- Fire extinguishers general (all charged, any used take out of service and stored in spare cabinet for re-charge, proper locations, etc.)
- Eye wash station (clean and functional)
- Shower station (clean and functional)
- First aid kits (stocked)
- Facility signage condition and opportunities
- Ladder condition and locations
- Site housekeeping
- Check bulk storage of chemicals for:
- No leaks
- Containment condition
- Tank labeling
- Spill kits (labeled and stocked)
- Drip pans and spill kits are being utilized as required.
- Update injury board
- Collect all checklists, review, and file properly.
- Monitor to ensure maintenance procedures on mobile equipment are being followed.
- Fire extinguishers are staged as required.
- Spotters as needed.
- Monitor the status of action items in the EHS KPA platform to highlight items risking “Past Due” status.
- Participate in the SMS risk assessment, JSA and SOP development process.
- Assist in policy/program development at the site level.
- Maintain SDS library for site.
- Identify training opportunities and coaching sessions for work force.
- Lead in the planning and execution of Hot Work equipment extraction/evacuation drills across SMS.
GENERAL DUTIES/TASKS: - Operation must be within parameters established to meet health, safety and environmental requirements as established by the company and by regulating authorities at the local, state and federal level.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and all types of weather (rain, snow, cold, heat)

- Ability to work weekends and holidays.
- Ability to travel to other SMS locations as needed.
SAFETY - This position will be highly visible and is responsible for setting a good example for SMS employees and client representatives.
- Adhere to all local, state and federal OSHA and environmental regulations as outlined by the company.
knowledge skills and abilities: - Established experience in steel manufacturing with exposure to Hot Work Operations
- Understanding of EHS concepts/requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish effective professional relationships with employees and supervisors.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite
